Legal Advice
DAWN Advice helped pioneer the delivery of legal services by telephone, regardless of the distance. Since 1994 we have delivered specialist legal advice and casework through telephone and distance-based support. Our work in this area contributed to the introduction in July 2004 of a national legal telephone service, CLS Direct, now known as Community Legal Advice.
We have worked in close partnership with colleagues at the Legal Services Commission on the development and service delivery of Community Legal Advice and we are one of its main contractors, delivering advice on a wide range of social welfare issues.
Who can use DAWN Advice?
"Having had the occasion to deal with your staff several times in the last couple of months I just wanted to say how helpful and informative I found them." A former client of DAWN Advice
DAWN's work on behalf of Community Legal Advice is primarily for people on low incomes who are eligible for legal help.
Although we will be happy to advise anyone who contacts us, we may need to ask some questions about your income and household details to establish whether we can take your case forward.
Should we be unable to assist or if you feel that you would prefer to speak to a legal advisor in your area, we will be able to run a search to find a suitable organisation.
If you are not sure whether we are the best people to help with your problem, just call Community Legal Advice on:
0845 345 4 345
9am - 5pm
Monday-Friday
If we cannot help, we will try and put you in touch with someone that can.

::
Need help with debt problems?

As almost anyone can find themselves in debt, DAWN Advice offers a free and confidential Debt Advice service for families and individuals. Whether you have one debt or many, small or large, we can help you deal with the situation so please get in touch for advice on any of the following:

Rent arrears

Council tax

Mortgage arrears

Credit

HP

Loans

Bailiffs

Court orders

Debt relief orders

What can we do to help?

On phoning us, you will be greeted by one of our trained advisors who will need to ask a few questions about your financial situation. It is important to stress that all information will be confidential and will not be given to any party outside the bureau without your permission.

During the call you could decide that no further help is needed... that's fine. If you want us to continue to help we will ask for your name and address and then post out our information pack.

It is important to remember that we will not do anything without your agreement and we will always keep you informed of our actions.

Nearly half of the reasons given for debt problems are a result of changes in circumstances - including job loss, relationship breakdown and illness - so there's nothing to feel embarrassed about.

How does the Debt Advice service work?

With your agreement we will send you some forms to complete which will then be returned to us. We may also need to see some of your papers such as copies of agreements you have signed, recent letters from your creditors, Court papers, etc.

Once we have all the necessary information we will contact all your creditors on your behalf to try to negotiate payment arrangements based on what you may realistically be able to afford.

Most creditors will be very reasonable once they have been told what the true financial situation is and the reasons for your present financial difficulties, and they may well accept lower repayments than you originally agreed to repay them. Normally all creditors will be treated equally in relation to the amount owed.

What we will do

If you are dependent on benefits and don't feel able to pay your creditors anything we may be able to negotiate with your creditors to accept nothing for a short while or until your situation improves.

Check whether you are getting all the money you are entitled to, e.g. tax allowances; benefits such as income support, housing benefit, working tax credit, child tax credit, council tax, benefits etc.

Explain which debts are a priority and why these should be paid before other debts.

Explain what actions your creditors can take and what actions you can take.

Help you work out a realistic figure that you can offer to the people you owe money to, including a full financial statement.

Advise on what to say to your creditors.

Help you deal with urgent problems such as threat of eviction, fuel disconnection, bailiffs visit, etc.

Help you with court forms and court hearings.

We will deal with creditors on your behalf by letter.

We will always keep you informed of our actions and we will pass on to you copies of correspondence from your creditors.

We will always return your calls or reply to your letters as quickly as possible.

What you will need to do

Negotiations with your creditors will be based entirely on the information you have supplied to us or authorised us to obtain. You will need to pass on to us all the relevant information that we need in order for us to be able to give you the best advice possible.

If your situation changes in any way you must advise us straight away.

Once we have negotiated payment arrangements you must keep to them or your creditors may withdraw their agreement to any special arrangements.

If for any reason you cannot afford one or all of your payments to creditors at any time you must contact DAWN straight away.

We may need to ask you to respond to our letters within a given timescale. This is necessary to enable us to offer you an efficient and effective service.

If you are unhappy about any aspect of our service you should contact DAWN's Manager who will try to resolve the matter to your satisfaction. If this fails you will be given details of our official complaints procedure.

If any creditors contact you after we have agreed to help, you should let DAWN know straight away.

You should not borrow any more money without first discussing the problem with us.

If you have credit cards you should not continue to use them. It may be necessary to cut them up and return them to the creditor.

Establish your housing status

Speak to your landlord or Local Authority, as required on issues including: homelessness, arrears, repairs etc.

Represent you at hearings or put forward written submissions on your behalf.

All of our advisors are experienced and qualified legal caseworkers and the work we do is assured by the Community Legal Advice Specialist Quality Mark. We are also audited on a regular basis by the Legal Services Commission.

Often people need only a small amount of help to resolve their problems but we aim to ensure that, if follow-up or ongoing work is required, that clients are directed towards the most appropriate help.

Court Duty Housing Schemes

Providing advice and support to individuals during difficult periods in their lives is at the heart of what DAWN Advice is about. For many people, attending court or trying to access advice can make a stressful situation seem worse.

We provide a lot of last minute advice and representation to clients who are at risk of losing their homes as part of our Legal Services Commission contract. Many people feel that by the time matters have got as far as court there is very little that can be done, but this is not the case. The Duty schemes are proving to be an essential and valuable tool in achieving positive outcomes for clients and enabling them to overcome their problems.

Through the scheme we provide representation in partnership with other suppliers, including solicitors and Law Centres at eight courts across the North East region. We act as lead agent on five of these schemes, managing the process and monitoring the quality of the work being delivered.

::
DAWN Advice is a not-for-profit organisation that works on behalf of Community Legal Advice, to assist people with social welfare problems and to increase access to justice.

We operate a telephone advisory service in the areas of Debt, Housing, Welfare Benefits and Employment Law. We have a long established reputation for providing excellent services to clients and for developing innovative methods to tackle social exclusion.

Job Opportunities

Caseworkers

DAWN Advice principally employs telephone advice caseworkers operating in the following categories of law:

Debt

Housing

Employment

Welfare Benefits

Although there are no immediate caseworker vacancies, we continually review our staffing levels. As a result of this review process, there is a possibility that further posts may be advertised.

Future applicants will:

Have an understanding of social welfare issues - experience in any one of the specific areas listed above is advantageous.

Relevant qualifications in law may be beneficial but are not essential. As category specific training is provided, the ability and enthusiasm to further develop necessary skills within a supportive and innovative team is more important.

Have experience in handling difficult or complex situations over the telephone.

Have basic administration skills to supplement the casework requirements.

Be able to demonstrate the ability to provide exceptional customer service.

Full and part time positions are usually considered with a starting salary of £17,165 increasing to £19,246 based on successful performance over an 18 month period.

We operate a contributory pension scheme after a qualifying period and offer 29 days a year holiday entitlement plus statutory bank holidays.

If you would like to be considered for future Advice Caseworker vacancies you can apply to join our talent pool - please contact our HR & Development Manager, Elaine Wallace-Legg, for an application pack on 01670 785 506 or email recruitment@dawnadvice.org.uk

Liz Chadwick, Chief Executive of DAWN Advice, said: "Over the previous 12 months we have seen requests for advice jump by 18.4 per cent while debt issues have soared by 20.2 per cent. Rural communities appear to have been particularly affected as there is a distinct lack of access to advice services in these areas - leaving residents in desperate need of extra support. We're confident we can help meet this increased demand."

A new telephone advice line will be established as part of the £1.5million scheme, which will allow DAWN Advice to create three new specialist telephone adviser roles to manage the scheme.

Extra face-to-face services, handled by the Citizen Advice Bureaux, will also be introduced. Both services will be funded through the Northern Rock Foundation's Managing Money Programme.

Liz added: "The programme will also launch a new pilot scheme that will see two video booths set up in remote areas across the region which will allow people to access advice using video conferencing technology.

"Although video conferencing may represent a new challenge for us - its success will open up an entirely new way to deliver advice services. Most people prefer to receive face-to-face advice but can not always travel to their nearest town; this aspect of the programme will allow people facing these difficulties to take advantage of debt advice regardless of where they live or their capacity to travel."

As a result of the new programme every channel of debt advice delivery will be integrated to offer greater choice to clients and to ensure that people access debt advice quicker than through present resources.

Penny Wilkinson, Chief Executive at Northern Rock Foundation, said: "The turn of the year is a particularly difficult time of year for people with debt problems and in the current financial climate we know there will be a lot of families in the region struggling to make ends meet. Our Managing Money Programme aims to help people in debt, or have other financial problems and needs."

Alongside the three new positions at DAWN Advice the funding from the Northern Rock Foundation will also provide 12 debt advisers at Citizen Advice Bureaux across the region, who will aim to help 8,000 people in two years.

Set up in 1998, DAWN Advice is a Northumberland-based social enterprise and a member of the UK's largest network of free, advice-providing organisations, adviceuk and will now become a Member of the National Association of Citizen's Advice Bureau. It offers advice and information on a number of issues including debt, housing, employment, welfare benefits and family law.

::
As many families are still feeling the pinch after Christmas a north east telephone advice service is advising people to begin looking ahead now and start saving for the year ahead.

Christmas 2010 may be 11 months away but Liz Chadwick, Chief Executive of DAWN Advice, says it's never too early to start saving for next Christmas to avoid any unnecessary debts.

Liz said people should still be putting an emphasis on saving despite the UK emerging from recession this week. She added: "As the majority of people are still paying off Christmas 2009, and will be for some months to come, the next festive period is the last thing on their minds. However, appropriate planning and saving can help many families reduce future debts while taking away some of the stress which is often caused through financial worries.

"Saving through a credit union offers an easy and convenient way for people to save as you can set aside as much or as little each month to suit your circumstances."

As well as the usual costs associated with December, January soon became one of the coldest months for three decades so many people living in the region will see their heating bills sky-rocket - creating extra debts which many may not have anticipated.

Liz added: "While advising people to save large sums of money is extremely unrealistic in the current climate - saving smaller sums through a local credit union will soon start to build up, creating a slight cushion should unexpected bills arrive or which could be used to help make family celebrations more affordable."

As credit unions are not-for-profit organisations and owned by the people who hold accounts with them, as opposed to high-street banks and other financial institutions, customers know that their money is being held in their best interests. In addition to this many credit unions exist to further community development, allowing people to support their own community through simply banking with their local union.

Established in 1998, DAWN Advice is a social enterprise and a member of the UK's largest network of free, advice-providing organisations, adviceuk and a member of the National Association of Citizen's Advice Bureau.

Anyone worried about debt or who may benefit from further financial advice such contact DAWN Advice's Debt Team as soon as possible on 01670 785 512.

::
Northumberland-based social enterprise, DAWN Advice has made an excellent start to the new year, as it welcomes one of the region's leading solicitors to its team.

Emma Davidson, 37 from Northumberland, has joined DAWN Advice as a Housing Solicitor. Prior to her appointment she worked as a senior partner at a private practice in Morpeth.

Her move to DAWN shows that the charity's work is being noticed by some of the brightest talents in the region.

She said: "In my previous role my time was spread across a number of different tasks and clients. Now I'm settled into DAWN Advice I am really enjoying the opportunity to focus my energies on those clients who need extra support with housing issues."

Born and raised in the area, Emma studied Music at Newcastle University before deciding upon a career in Law, which she studied at the College of Law in York. Upon returning home to the North East she worked hard to reach the top levels of her field, and so brings a great deal of expertise to her new role.

"I am really enjoying working at DAWN, it is so nice to be surrounded by such a big team of dedicated people. It's a great feeling to be working at a company which provides such comprehensive social welfare services to people who really need them, and I can honestly say that I have never worked with such an incredible and highly skilled team that really cares about their work," she said.

Liz Chadwick, Chief Executive of DAWN Advice, said: "I'm thrilled that Emma has chosen to come and join us, and that we have found such an enthusiastic and committed new colleague. Coming from such a senior position she brings with her a wealth of professional experience which she has already put to good use. I am confident that as we move forward in 2010 she will play a large part in extending our services even further throughout the community."

In her spare time Emma continues her passion for music by playing the flute and going to gigs. She also enjoys reading comics and graphic novels.

Set up in 1998, DAWN Advice is a Northumberland-based social enterprise and a member of the UK's largest network of free, advice-providing organisations, adviceuk and will now become a Member of the National Association of Citizen's Advice Bureau. ::
The chief executive of a north east telephone advice service says numbers of domestic abuse cases could increase as temperatures plummet this winter.

Liz Chadwick, chief executive of DAWN Advice, said seasonal issues such as excessive alcohol consumption and money worries are all major triggers in domestic abuse cases.

She said the freezing conditions have forced people to spend more time indoors, making the problem worse, and urged the region's victims of domestic violence to seek help.

She said: "The festive season is supposed to be a happy and joyous time for families, however sometimes the immense pressures of Christmas can be all too much and we see a sharp increase in domestic violence rates throughout December and January.

"Anyone who has suffered domestic abuse over the Christmas holidays shouldn't feel they need to suffer alone and should seek help immediately. Through our family law team victims can access invaluable legal advice to help them change their situation."

DAWN Advice's family law solicitors meet clients on an emergency basis and offers advice on their available options, including court protection. If necessary an application for a Non Molestation Order will be made to the court to prevent abusers from pestering, harassing or intimidating their victims.

Liz added: "Domestic abuse is often hidden and victims can feel embarrassed or ashamed, however anyone can find themselves a victim of abuse and they need to know where to turn. National statistics state that while one in four women experience domestic violence, so do one in six men. By contacting us victims are making the important first step to improve their situation."

To further support families facing domestic abuse, DAWN Advice works closely with a number of partner organisations, including Cease 24, Women's Health Advice Centre, sixtyeightythirty, Citizens Advice Bureau and the Domestic Violence Team at Northumbria Police, to ensure victims receive appropriate emotional support as well as legal help.

Based in North East England, DAWN Advice offers free, confidential and independent advice to people across the region and nationally on issues relating to housing, debt, employment, welfare benefits and family law.

Established in 1998, DAWN Advice is a social enterprise and a member of the UK's largest network of free, advice-providing organisations, adviceuk and will now become a Member of the National Association of Citizen's Advice Bureau.

Domestic abuse can take several forms, ranging from physical and sexual to economical and emotional abuse. Anyone concerned about domestic violence or has become a victim should contact the Family Law Team at DAWN Advice on 01670 785512.

::
Financial experts from Northumberland-based social enterprise DAWN Advice are warning against the dangers of sacrificing their festive feelings to unscrupulous loan sharks this Christmas.

DAWN Advice, based in Seaton Burn, says the pressure of buying expensive presents for the whole family during the recession could see more people than ever before resorting to unlicensed moneylenders - and the exorbitant repayment rates they demand.

Recent figures have shown that annually around 15,000 people borrow money from loan sharks, a large proportion of those who do so in the run up to Christmas. Often rogue moneylenders charge extortionate rates of interest, making it impossible for borrowers to pay back the money - these rates can be as high as 200 per cent, but on occasion annual percentage rates have been seen to soar as high as 149,000 per cent.

Liz Chadwick, Chief Executive of DAWN Advice, says when borrowers can no longer afford the steep repayments, lenders often turn to tactics of intimidation and violence, potentially turning what is meant to be a season of festive cheer into one of misery and apprehension.

She added: "December can often be a stressful time for families as we all feel under pressure to have the perfect Christmas day with great presents and food. It is important to remember however that it is really a time for family and that you don't need a lot of money to have a wonderful holiday.

"I would encourage people to work out what they can safely afford to spend this Christmas, and stick to this budget rather than looking to borrow money from unscrupulous sources. No gift is worth risking the threats of a loan shark for, and those that do often find they are trapped in an impossible cycle of increasing repayments they are unable to afford.

"At DAWN we offer support to people who are suffering from debt and our finance professionals can offer advice on the best way to prepare and budget for the festive season. At this time of year especially, we want to reassure people suffering financially that they are not alone."

DAWN Advice offers free, confidential and independent advice to people across the region and nationally on issues relating to housing, debt, employment, welfare benefits and family law.

Established in 1998, DAWN Advice is a social enterprise and a member of the UK's largest network of free, advice-providing organisations, adviceuk and will now become a Member of the National Association of Citizen's Advice Bureau.

::
Northumberland advice services will receive a £150,000 boost as DAWN Advice launches a new scheme under the social enterprise's Charitable Reserves programme.

DAWN Advice has set aside £150,000 to help make advice services more accessible to people living across Northumberland and to help those who struggle to access traditional face-to-face outlets in the county.

Seaton Burn-based, DAWN Advice has appointed a solicitor and four qualified advice workers to oversee the designation of the funding, which has been made available through the social enterprise's Charitable Reserves.

Chief Executive of DAWN Advice, Liz Chadwick says the scheme will dramatically help residents living in isolated areas across Northumberland and will bring extra advice services to rural communities.

She said: "Financial exclusion is a major concern for many rural areas so we have chosen to use a proportion of our Charitable Reserves to bring advice services closer to these communities.

"Such issues are not always easy to identify in small villages and can remain hidden - unlike in urban cities - especially in these difficult financial times.

"Transport links from rural villages can be limited and in turn this can restrict the services which residents can access. As a result of this additional funding we will be able to offer a range of advice services at key community venues to ensure these vital lifelines are within easy reach for people.

"As part of the new scheme we will identify the community need for more advice services across Northumberland, where there is an appropriate need we will allocate funding to cover the costs of running these important services. DAWN Advice has had another very successful year and we are delighted to be able to support the community in this way."

DAWN Advice is a not-for-profit organisation and to help protect it against any future uncertainties the Trustees set aside any additional funds as its Charitable Reserves. This allows charities to absorb setbacks and to put money back into the community that it serves. It is through these reserves that DAWN Advice is now able to offer this enhanced access to advice services.

Set up in 1998, DAWN Advice is a member of the UK's largest network of free, advice-providing organisations, adviceuk and is a Member of the National Association of Citizen's Advice Bureau. It offers advice and information on a number of issues including debt, housing, employment, welfare benefits and family law.

::
A Northumberland social enterprise is reaping the benefits of its support of local talent - and is urging the region's other employers to follow suit.

DAWN Advice, whose qualified experts offer free advice and support on a range of issues such as housing, financial and legal matters, has just handed its first ever legal training contract.

James Charlton, 30, a former hotelier from Amble in Northumberland, with a degree in Business Studies from Durham, joined DAWN in March 2007 and the organisation supported him while he studied towards his Legal Practice Certificate (LPC) at Northumbria University.

He has now finished his course and has been offered a full-time training contract at DAWN, which chief executive Liz Chadwick said is incredibly rare.

"We are really breaking new ground here as not-for-profit organisations like ours are rarely in a position to offer training contracts," she said.

"James used to run a hotel in the area and has a wealth of experience at dealing with people. With no universities here, Northumberland loses a lot of its best talent as people move away to study and don't return.

"DAWN supports skilled professionals by offering training and support - by offering James this position, we have been able to keep a talented person living and working in the area.

"His enthusiasm for helping people really shone through and we were delighted to offer him the first training contract in the history of DAWN Advice."

James said he was delighted with the opportunity to develop his lifelong interest in legal advice. As part of his work, he will be specialising in family and housing law, which will include attending family court, handling Emergency Applications for Occupation and Non Molestation Orders.

::
Leading North East social enterprise DAWN Advice has teamed up with Northumberland Warm Zone to help the region's worst-off families save money and energy this winter.

Northumberland Warm Zone was originally one of only five pilot schemes launched in 2001 as part of the Government's strategy to tackle fuel poverty alongside working to reduce carbon emissions and save people money through the installation of insulation measures.

It aims to provide aid to people in the region who suffer financially due to the rising cost of energy - it's estimated up to 5.5million people nationwide are living in 'fuel poverty,' spending more than 10 per cent of their household income on fuel costs.

Warm Zone has now partnered with DAWN Advice, which works both within the local community and nationwide to provide financial support and legal advice. People approaching DAWN with fuel cost issues will be referred to Warm Zone for help reducing both energy usage and bills.

Warm Zone helps do so through a number of different services, including giving energy efficiency and benefits advice and helping to arrange the installation of such energy saving measures as cavity wall and loft insulation and draught proofing. Warm Zone can also help clients requiring central heating and heating repair, subject to status.

Liz Chadwick, Chief Executive of DAWN Advice, said: "Warm Zone does outstanding work in the area with those people suffering in fuel poverty and we feel very privileged to be part of that process.

She continued: "The combined energies of both DAWN and Warm Zone will allow us to reach even more local people and with temperatures dropping we are looking forward to making sure as few people as possible suffer from the infamous Northern winter."

Alan Milburn, Director of Northumberland Warm Zone, said: "This partnership with DAWN Ltd offers Warm Zone the opportunity to deliver a more holistic service to the people in most need within the county."

::
A north east Chief Executive is urging more employers to consider the well-being of their staff after taking part in a regional health initiative and seeing the results for herself.

Since joining the Northumberland Healthy People - Healthy Business Award, which is run by Northumberland Care Trust, employees at DAWN Advice have benefited from a series of special health campaigns offering important information and advice.

Liz Chadwick, Chief Executive of DAWN Advice, hopes that many of the region's employers will follow suit to help improve the health and well-being of the north east's workforce.

She said: "The Healthy People - Healthy Business programme offers a real wealth of benefits and allows employees to access important health information easily and conveniently. All of our employees have praised the programme and it has certainly helped to improve staff morale.

"Each of our campaigns has offered simple yet essential advice on staying healthy as well as quizzes and activities to help get people thinking and most importantly to ensure the programme remains fun.

"A happy and healthy workforce is key for any organisation no matter its size or sector and especially in today's circumstances. If staff morale is low then businesses are more likely to suffer from an increased level of staff illness and therefore a higher rate of absenteeism," Liz added.

Through the award, DAWN Advice has organised a number of themed campaigns to help promote healthier lives - focusing on smoking cessation, healthy hearts, cancer prevention, fruity Friday and sun care.

Alongside providing health advice to its workforce the programme has also seen DAWN Advice create its own Social Fund to help fund and encourage social inclusion across the company.

Liz added: "In difficult financial circumstances it can become all too easy for companies to become distracted from the responsibilities it has with its employees but we must always remember that employees are at the heart of any organisation and helping them to maintain good health and well-being is essential."

Advantages of a healthy workforce include a reduction in sickness and absenteeism, a reduction in early retirement, lower stress and increased productivity, better staff loyalty and in turn lower recruitment costs, an improved corporate image and of course healthy and motivated staff

Developed by Northumberland Care Trust the Northumberland Healthy People - Healthy Business Award aims to reduce ill health both in workers and the public caused, or made worse, by work, to help people who have been ill, whether caused by work or not, to return to work, to improve work opportunities for people currently unemployed due to ill health or disability and to use the work environment to help people maintain or improve their health.

Established in 1998, DAWN Advice is a Northumberland-based social enterprise and a member of the UK's largest network of free, advice-providing organisations, adviceuk and a Member of the National Association of Citizen's Advice Bureau. It offers advice and information on a number of issues including debt, housing, employment, welfare benefits and family law.

::
DAWN Advice, a leading north east social enterprise, says the UK's network of support services must adapt to meet the needs of a changing society.

As the Citizens Advice Bureau celebrated its 70th birthday today, Liz Chadwick - Chief Executive of DAWN Advice which also operates Morpeth Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) - said soaring levels of personal debt means free and impartial advice services are as important today as ever before.

"History has taught us that there will always be vulnerable and disadvantaged groups within our society - this has been the case throughout the 70 years of Citizens Advice," she added.

"The CAB was originally launched following the start of World War II when rationing, evacuation and air raids were the main cause for concern. The banking crisis and the complexity of financial services were the furthest things on the country's mind in 1939; however they have become a very real issue for today's generation.

"As society, and in particular our region, changes and more people require support with varying legal issues help needs to be available, specifically for people living in rural areas, through alternative means such as telephone services, outreach services and increasing access to justice.

"People living across the north east have faced many different crises over the past 70 years and the one thing which has remained constant is the need for appropriate and quality impartial advice. Throughout its 70 year history the Citizens Advice Bureau really has helped pave the way to ensure that these services are always available to the people who need them most."

::
A North East charity is hoping to help people through tough times by expanding its debt advice team.

DAWN Advice, a Northumberland-based social enterprise that employs over 70 financial and legal experts to provide free debt advice, has recruited an extra seven staff to its debt advice team after it was inundated with enquiries.

DAWN now has a 27-strong team dedicated to manning its telephone debt advice lines, which respond to requests for help from throughout the country.

Liz Chadwick, Chief Executive at DAWN Advice, said she was delighted to be creating extra jobs in the region - but admitted the circumstances were unfortunate.

She said: "Perhaps unsurprisingly, since the recession started we have been dealing with ever-increasing numbers of enquiries about managing debt.

"The level of consumer debt in the UK is estimated at around £1.5billion and the problem has been made worse by the recession as people find themselves unable to cope with debt that they have taken on.

"Debt is, for some reason, a taboo subject - we hear from people who have worked all their lives and feel too embarrassed to admit to their families or friends that they are in trouble.

"DAWN can lend people a sympathetic ear but we also have plenty of fully-qualified experts who can give people the best advice on how to handle their situation.

"The North East is not the only region to have been hit - barely a day goes by without news of more redundancies and company closures around the UK.

"DAWN is growing as an enterprise and I am delighted with our success, but it's hard to celebrate when we are dealing every day with such tragic stories."

Set up in 1998, DAWN Advice is a Northumberland-based social enterprise and a member of the UK's largest network of free, advice-providing organisations, adviceuk. It offers advice and information on a number of issues including debt, housing, employment, welfare benefits and family law.

As DAWN Advice's new Contracts and Relationship Manager Matt Goldsmith, 38, will oversee the services run by the organisation's existing contract providers while exploring new contract opportunities for the charity.

Matt will join DAWN Advice's head office in Seaton Burn and will work closely with its Chief Executive as the charity continues to expand and to help the organisation meet its main target of supporting people with legal issues.

Commenting on his new position, Matt said: "This is a real growth period for DAWN Advice with lots of new contract opportunities opening up for us to explore and develop. It is a difficult time for many people throughout the country so it's important that we are able to offer an outstanding service to help them with their problems, not only through our telephone advice line but also through our contract providers.

"The rewards of working within the charitable sector are unlimited and I'm definitely looking forward to the challenges which working in such a sector will bring," Matt added.

::
Morpeth residents left devastated following the 2008 flash floods have praised the support they received from their local advice bureau and are relieved the service will now continue.

Morpeth Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) was faced with closure earlier this year as additional requests for services saw annual running costs rocket to £70,000. In June a merger between Morpeth CAB and DAWN Advice, a Northumberland-based charity which offers free independent legal advice, has allowed the bureau to continue its services.

Now John Short, of High Stanners who was distraught to find his bungalow submerged in four feet of water after the River Wansbeck burst its banks last September, is thrilled the agency will still be on-hand to offer further support to residents.

John, 71, accessed the advice services in the aftermath of the floods and has said that the bureau has become invaluable to people living across Northumberland. "It was a definite comfort knowing that the Citizens Advice Bureau was there after the floods as I really couldn't have managed without their help," John said.

As with many of the flood victims, John found himself without the appropriate insurance. "Everything was completely destroyed and I didn't know what to do. I contacted the citizens advice in Morpeth and they told me about a Government fund which would help me back on my feet. The staff and volunteers were wonderful - they helped me complete my forms, chased the claim up for me and offered a great deal of support.

"I was really delighted to hear that DAWN Advice had stepped in to help Morpeth CAB carry on. I know a lot of people who have used the services and they have all been more than happy with the results - and I'm sure they will be just as pleased about the merger," John added.

During the floods, which saw over a month's worth of rain fall in just 24 hours, more than 900 homes were affected and damages in excess of £40million were caused across the market town.

The floods also left Deborah Bamford's home in Middlegreens with significant damage, including a water-logged gas meter and no gas supply. After struggling to have her case dealt with by her gas provider she consulted Morpeth CAB.

Deborah said: "There was so much to deal with following the floods and it was extremely frustrating because my gas supplier refused to deal with the situation and I had so many other things which needed to be sorted too. I spoke with a member of the Morpeth Citizens Advice Bureau team at the Town Hall and they took over immediately. It was a real weight lifted from my mind and I could concentrate on getting my home put back together as quickly as possible."

Thanks to Morpeth CAB's intervention Deborah had a new meter fitted three weeks later and the gas supply restored to her family home.

As DAWN Advice takes over the running of the Morpeth CAB people living across Morpeth and its surrounding towns will continue to benefit from the vital information and advice.

Liz Chadwick, Chief Executive of DAWN Advice, said: "Since it opened in 1974, Morpeth CAB has helped thousands of people overcome a range of issues including benefits and social security, consumer problems, legal queries and family/personal matters.

"Many of the people who access these services do so regularly, and it has - in turn - become an important lifeline for a lot of the town's residents so we were extremely keen to be able to help keep Morpeth CAB open.

"We have over ten years of experience in providing quality-assured legal advice to people from across the region who are dealing with a wide range of issues, so joining together with Morpeth CAB has been a natural progression for the organisation."

::
Northumberland based charity, DAWN Advice is urging the region's businesses to offer employees additional support as the North East continues to fight through the recession.

Through DAWN Advice's Employee Assistance Programme, a telephone counselling service, organisations can provide their staff members with free and confidential help and advice on matters relating to debt, welfare benefits and housing.

Worries surrounding finance and housing can have a big impact on individuals both in their personal and work lives. The Employee Assistance Programme gives employees the opportunity to access information and guidance easily and conveniently over the telephone.

Liz Chadwick, Chief Executive of DAWN Advice, said starting the programme could play a key role in boosting staff morale.

She explained: "The Employee Assistance Programme offers a practical service for the region's organisations and is an important method in improving staff well-being. This is a difficult time for both employers and their staff members; however the service allows individuals to talk through their concerns with experienced and understanding professionals."

The Employee Assistance Programme works to increase efficiency and commitment in the workplace as well as reducing costs and absentee levels. The service helps employees to reduce stress and anxiety which will in turn improve their health and well-being.

Liz added: "This programme offers support and advice around matters that can be particularly sensitive and can also cause a great deal of stress to individuals. To ensure callers are as comfortable as possible, every caller is assigned an adviser so each time they call they hear a friendly voice which they know they can trust.

"It's a little bit of a cliché, but happier workers really will be more productive. By providing the right support employers can help stop this recession from becoming a depression."

Companies involved with the programme receive a dedicated advice-line for their employees to call if they have worries or issues around finance. Callers are then assigned a fully-trained adviser to help individuals work through their situation - and where necessary sign-post to specialist organisations.

For more information on the Employee Assistance Programme contact DAWN Advice on 01670 785 505.
